Mark Joseph from the documentary Road to Muxia. The story of a man’s pilgrimage on the 500-mile Camino de Santiago after surviving a car accident and the experiencing the death of his father.

After a car accident and the loss of his father, Mark Pareto set out to walk the Camino in his father’s honor, carrying his ashes. Meeting filmmaker Jonathan Fernandez in Bolivia turned the journey into a documentary, with friend Alberto joining. Starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, they let the Camino shape a story of love, grief, and healing.

From Santiago to the Edge of the Sea

When Mark Pareto arrived in Santiago de Compostela, he didn’t feel the joy he expected. Something was missing. Guided by a priest’s advice, he continued walking to Muxía, carrying not only his pack but also the ashes of his late father. That final stretch – to the rocky Galician coast – became the emotional heart of Road to Muxía, a documentary exploring how pilgrimage can help us face grief and find peace.

A Promise and a Film

Mark’s Camino began with a promise to his father: they would walk it together. But after a near-fatal car accident and his father’s passing, that promise became a mission. In Bolivia, Mark shared his story with filmmaker Jonathan Fernandez, who saw in it the potential for something powerful. Joined by friend Alberto, they set out from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, recording not only Mark’s journey but also the stories of fellow pilgrims walking for their own reasons – healing, forgiveness, love, or personal transformation.

The Camino’s Gift

For Jonathan, filming while walking was both a challenge and a privilege. Some moments were too personal to capture, but the Camino revealed itself in other ways: through shared meals, unexpected encounters, and quiet stretches of trail where grief slowly turned into gratitude. Road to Muxía is more than a travelogue – it’s a testament to how the Camino weaves strangers’ lives together and opens the heart to new beginnings.

Mark is a Canadian pilgrim who walked the Camino in honor of his father. Jonathan is a Bolivian-American filmmaker who joined Mark to document the journey, creating a film that captures the Camino’s human depth.
