Join Matthew Krause on an emotional journey as he shares his experience walking the Camino de Santiago. Discover the power of the Camino to inspire, connect, and transform

After a painful breakup, Mathew set out on the Camino de Santiago seeking space to heal. The walk gave him clarity, friendships, and a deep connection to the pilgrim spirit –  one that later inspired him to return, this time with a lighter heart and a new perspective.

A First Camino That Changed Everything

Mathew first walked the Camino de Santiago after a painful breakup. He hadn’t set out with a grand plan – just a need to step away from his life and into something completely different. That first journey brought him more than the stunning landscapes of northern Spain; it gave him time to process, space to breathe, and the unexpected gift of friendship.

Like many pilgrims, he thought he might walk it just once. But the Camino has a way of calling you back.

Answering the Call Again

Years later, Mathew returned – not to repeat the same journey, but to experience the Camino in a new way. The second time around, he carried fewer doubts and more openness to the people and moments that make the road so special. Walking without the urgency of “needing” the Camino allowed him to notice the little things: conversations at albergues, the quiet beauty of early mornings, the rhythm of simply putting one foot in front of the other.

He also found himself sharing advice and encouragement with first-time pilgrims, becoming part of the support system that had once held him up.

The Camino as a Lifelong Companion

Mathew’s story is a reminder that the Camino doesn’t end in Santiago. It becomes part of you – shaping how you approach challenges, relationships, and even everyday routines. For him, it’s not just about the walking; it’s about the way the Camino teaches patience, gratitude, and presence.

He believes the pilgrimage can meet you at any stage of life – whether you come to it searching for answers, seeking adventure, or simply ready for a new perspective. And sometimes, it’s worth answering the call more than once.

Mathew is a passionate traveler and repeat pilgrim whose experiences on the Camino de Santiago have shaped his outlook on life. Through walking, reflection, and connection, he’s found healing and inspiration – and encourages others to take their own first (or second) steps toward the journey.
