Camino families are real. Today Nico and I will talk about our Camino journey and the experiences that we lived.

Nico first heard of the Camino from a friend years earlier, but it wasn’t until the summer before his final year of university that he felt called to walk it. Flying from Venice to Spain, he began in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port – ready for a personal challenge but open to whatever the road would bring. What he found was friendship, generosity, and a journey he’ll never forget.

A Solo Start, a Shared Path

When Nico left Italy in 2017 to walk the Camino Francés, he expected a solo adventure filled with culture and challenge. But just days into the journey, in the town of Estella, he crossed paths with fellow pilgrims who would soon become his Camino family.

The Spirit of the Road

Walking together through vineyards, the Meseta’s winds, and Galicia’s green hills, Nico and his new friends shared meals, laughs, and the small acts of kindness that make the Camino special. There were moments of practical help too – like when a fellow pilgrim lent him money without hesitation after his card failed.

Friendship Beyond Santiago

For Nico, the Camino was less about religion and more about human connection. He stayed in Santiago for three extra days, welcoming each friend as they arrived, reliving their shared journey. That summer left him with lifelong bonds and a deep respect for the Camino’s unique way of bringing strangers together.

Nico is an Italian pilgrim who walked the Camino Francés in 2017, discovering the joy of connection and the lasting bonds of a Camino family.
