Two young people embark on a journey to walk the Via Francigena, seeking freedom and exploring the history of pilgrimage.

Walking Liminality began when its creators, inspired by their own Caminos, set out to explore the pilgrimage as a living example of life’s “in-between” spaces – blending personal stories with academic insight.

What Is Liminality?

Liminality is that in-between stage of transition – when you’ve left one chapter of life but haven’t yet arrived at the next. The Camino de Santiago, with its long days of walking and simple routines, is a perfect example of this state.

For the team behind Walking Liminality, the pilgrimage became not just a personal journey, but a way to explore this concept more deeply. They saw the Camino as a living laboratory for understanding how time, space, and identity shift when we step out of our everyday roles.

From Personal Steps to Shared Stories

Drawing on both academic research and lived experience, Walking Liminality examines the Camino as more than just a trail — it’s a transitional space where transformation can occur. Through conversations with other pilgrims, observations of daily life on the road, and reflections on their own walks, the team captures the essence of how the Camino changes people.

They highlight that liminality isn’t just about uncertainty; it’s also about possibility – the openness to new connections, ideas, and ways of being.

Walking Liminality is a creative-academic collaboration dedicated to studying and sharing the transformative power of pilgrimage. By blending theory with storytelling, they offer a deeper look at why the Camino de Santiago holds such enduring appeal.
