From Sydney to Santiago – Lorenzo Gella’s Life-Changing Camino Journey
Today we talk with Lorenzo Gella an Australian pilgrim that walked the Camino de Santiago to start a new journey of his life.
The Camino came into Lorenzo’s life by chance – a TV program lit the spark, and within 18 months he was ready to walk. Originally planning a September start, a sudden career change in February 2019 opened a rare window of time. He seized it, traded his comfort plans for the true pilgrim experience, and walked 850 kilometers that would change his life forever.
An Unexpected Calling
For Lorenzo Gella, the Camino de Santiago wasn’t a lifelong dream – in fact, he had never even heard of it. One evening, a TV documentary about the pilgrimage caught his attention. Within minutes, he turned to his wife and declared, “I have to do that someday.” The seed was planted, and his life began to shift toward the Way.
Preparing for the Unknown
Over the next 18 months, Lorenzo prepared both body and mind. He lost 20 kilos through training, walked daily to build endurance, and broke in the shoes that would carry him across northern Spain. Initially, he planned a “luxury” version of the Camino with private rooms – but life had other plans.
In early 2019, Lorenzo left his job after six years. With an unexpected month of freedom, he swapped hotel bookings for the albergue experience – embracing communal living, shared meals, and the authentic pilgrim spirit.
Walking into Transformation
Lorenzo’s Camino wasn’t just about the miles. It was a spiritual journey too, though winter’s closed churches sometimes made pilgrim Masses rare. Still, the moments he did find – like a moving service in Santiago’s temporary cathedral – left a lasting mark.
Along the way, he met pilgrims walking for every imaginable reason: grief, recovery, adventure, or simply curiosity. In those chance encounters, over coffee or along dusty trails, he learned that the Camino is as much about the people as it is about the path.
A Sydney-based pilgrim, Lorenzo walked the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela in early 2019. His journey deepened his faith and sparked dreams of returning to walk the Camino del Norte.
