A tour of Burgos main historical landmarks, perfect for those starting the Camino de Santiago. From the majestic Cathedral of Santa María to the peaceful Paseo del Espolón, discover the city’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Start your day by exploring Burgos most iconic landmark, the Cathedral of Santa María. This stunning Gothic masterpiece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its majestic architecture and the tomb of El Cid and his wife, Doña Jimena, key figures in Spanish history. Admire the beauty of its chapels and main altar, reflecting on your journey along the Camino de Santiago.

From the cathedral, walk to Plaza Mayor, a perfect spot to pause and soak in the historic atmosphere and elegant architecture. Stop by a nearby café for a coffee and pintxo, relaxing before continuing your tour.

Next, head to the Arco de Santa María, one of the ancient medieval gates built to commemorate Emperor Charles V’s visit in the 16th century. This impressive gateway, which houses a small museum, leads to the Santa María Bridge, offering picturesque views of the Arlanzón River and the Paseo del Espolón.

Head to the Monastery of Las Huelgas Reales, a 12th-century monastic complex of great historical and religious significance. Stroll through its cloisters and explore its collection of medieval art and royal tombs in a serene, contemplative setting.

Next, visit the Castle of Burgos, perched atop a hill with breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. This is the perfect spot to take a break and reflect on the journey ahead along the Camino de Santiago.

Just a short walk from the castle, stop by the Castle Viewpoint, which offers one of the best panoramic views of the cathedral and historic center, making it an ideal spot for photos and quiet admiration.

Don’t miss the Hospital del Rey, founded in the 12th century to care for pilgrims. Now part of the University of Burgos, it still preserves its original structure and stands as a symbol of hospitality for those walking the Camino.

End your day with a leisurely walk along the Paseo del Espolón, a beautiful tree-lined promenade by the Arlanzón River. Relax in this peaceful setting, and consider attending the Pilgrim’s Mass at the cathedral or a nearby church—an appreciated tradition for those preparing to continue their journey.
