Discover Manresa, a key spiritual stop on the Ignatian Way. Visit the Cave of Saint Ignatius, the majestic Gothic basilica, and the museum dedicated to his legacy. A unique experience of faith, history, and reflection.

Manresa, with its deep historical and spiritual connection to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, offers several iconic sites that pilgrims on the Ignatian Way should not miss.

Saint Ignatius Cave

The Saint Ignatius Cave is one of the most emblematic places in Manresa and on the entire Ignatian route. In 1522, Saint Ignatius of Loyola retreated to this cave on the outskirts of the city for spiritual exercises and deep introspection.

During his stay, Ignatius experienced a series of mystical encounters that marked the beginning of his spiritual work. It was here that he wrote the first drafts of what would become his famous Spiritual Exercises, a foundational work that has inspired thousands throughout the centuries. The cave maintains its atmosphere of contemplation and spirituality, inviting visitors to connect with the same spirit of reflection and meditation experienced by Saint Ignatius.

Basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu

The Basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu, one of Manresa’s architectural treasures, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. This Gothic church is not only impressive in its design but also houses a chapel dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola. It was in this temple that Ignatius prayed devoutly during his stay in Manresa and consecrated himself to the Virgin Mary in an act of deep faith.

The basilica is known for its splendid façade, vibrant stained-glass windows telling sacred stories, and a majestic interior filled with sculptures and details that evoke the spiritual richness of the era.

Manresa Museum (former College of Saint Ignatius)

The Manresa Museum, located in the former College of Saint Ignatius, is a key place to understand the life and legacy of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Founded by Ignatius in 1527, it was here that the first studies began, laying the foundation of Jesuit education.

The museum hosts a rich collection of religious art, historical documents, and artifacts that explore the life of Saint Ignatius and the development of the city of Manresa. In addition to being a museum, it also serves as an interpretation center for the Ignatian Way, where pilgrims can learn about the saint’s journey and its global impact.

These places are not only of tourist interest—they also offer a deep immersion in the history and spirituality of the Ignatian Way.
